Now that I only have three night shifts left to work...I finally have a solution the my problem of needing a snack and coffee when I get up, but not wanting a whole meal because I'll be eating dinner in an hour or two (or because I'm going running after I get up).
Enter the chocolate coffee protein shake...
1 1/2 cups milk (I used almond cocounut milk)
2 shots espresso (or some strong brewed coffee)
1/2 scoop protein powder (probably chocolate or vanilla, other flavors might not go with coffee)
ice cubes
Blend...and enjoy!
I'm not sure that the protein powder necessarily makes it much more of a meal than it would be without it, but blending it up definitely makes it thick and more meal-like.
